After circling the position for what felt like forever, the Patriots committed. Jayden Daniels is the quarterback now, and the roster gets built to his timeline. A near-flawless weekend of work, and a A- to cap it.
The dealing alone would carry a lesser class. Whatever else happened, they won the night they took McGlothern. Thomas has a lot of ground to make up just to look fairly priced.
The safety spot stays a question, and it was the one they most needed an answer at.
In the end it comes back to Jayden Daniels, and a haul good enough to build on right away.
Pick-by-Pick
R1.8
· Pick 8
· Jayden Daniels
· QB
· rank 6
A straight-up fair deal on Jayden Daniels at pick 8, value and slot in agreement. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
R2.2
· Pick 34
· Jordan Morgan
· OT
· rank 37
They took Jordan Morgan at par in the 34th pick, which is nothing to complain about. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
R2.11
· Pick 43
· Brian Thomas Jr.
· WR
· rank 28
Quietly one of the better values of the day, Brian Thomas Jr. at pick No. 43. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
R3.4
· Pick 68
· Kingsley Suamataia
· OT
· rank 61
Kingsley Suamataia at Round 3, Pick 4 is a sensible buy, a touch better than market for the offensive lineman. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
R4.3
· Pick 103
· Braelon Allen
· RB
· rank 106
Braelon Allen at the 103rd overall pick is right where the board had him, plain and simple. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
R5.1
· Pick 137
· Jarrian Jones
· CB
· rank 136
No edge and no loss on Jarrian Jones in No. 137; it is a wash and a sensible one. A minor itch, scratched.
R5.7
· Pick 143
· Xavier Thomas
· DE-EDGE
· rank 163
A big swing on Xavier Thomas at the Round 5 slot, well ahead of any board in the building. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
R6.5
· Pick 180
· Dwight McGlothern
· CB
· rank 161
Taking Dwight McGlothern in slot 180 is close to grand larceny; a cornerback that good had no business lasting this long. Insurance at a position that did not really ask for it.
R6.18
· Pick 193
· Fabien Lovett
· DL
· rank 184
The board had Fabien Lovett higher than the Round 6 slot, and the interior defensive lineman fell to them anyway. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
R7.11
· Pick 231
· Jordan Magee
· LB
· rank 222
Jordan Magee at pick No. 231 is the sort of value that quietly wins a weekend. Not urgent, but hardly pointless.
