After circling the position for what felt like forever, the Patriots committed. J.J. McCarthy is the quarterback now, and the roster gets built to his timeline.
The phones were where this weekend was really won. Getting Fashanu where they did is the sort of value that quietly makes a class.
They punted on interior defensive lineman, and it is the miss that keeps the grade honest.
Bottom line, with J.J. McCarthy leading the way, this is a class that should pay off fast and rarely be regretted.
Pick-by-Pick
In the 12th pick they get a franchise quarterback, reach and all. A clean fit for the roster.
Olumuyiwa Fashanu in No. 34 is the kind of fall that makes a whole class. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Devontez Walker at pick No. 68 is right where the board had him, plain and simple. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Nice patience on Ricky Pearsall, who had no business lasting to slot 76. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
No drama and no debate, Cole Bishop went about where he belonged in the 103rd overall pick. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Jalyx Hunt at Round 5, Pick 1 jumps the queue by a touch more than is comfortable. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Dwight McGlothern at the Round 6 slot is the steal of the weekend, a first-round talent at a bargain-bin price. Useful depth more than a marquee fix.
Curtis Jacobs in pick 193 is exactly on the number, no argument either way. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
They stopped a slide they were happy to see, landing Garret Greenfield in Round 7, Pick 11. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
