New England Patriots

The Patriots bet the future on Penix Jr.. The board says B.

They finally answered the question that shadows every other one. Michael Penix Jr. is the Patriots' quarterback, full stop. Nothing here to lose sleep over; call it a B.

They are betting Barrett proves the room right and everyone else wrong. Every deal seemed to tilt their way, which is not luck.

The Jones value carries more weight than any single miss elsewhere.

Solid rather than spectacular, and there is nothing wrong with that.

Pick-by-Pick

R1.22 · Pick 22 · Michael Penix Jr. · QB · rank 9
In No. 22 they get a passer to set the clock by at a price that makes it sweeter.
R2.1 · Pick 33 · Ja'Tavion Sanders · TE · rank 36
Ja'Tavion Sanders at the Round 2 slot is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
R2.2 · Pick 34 · Xavier Legette · WR · rank 38
Xavier Legette at pick 34 is right where the board had him, plain and simple. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
R2.18 · Pick 50 · Ricky Pearsall · WR · rank 59
A reach for Ricky Pearsall in pick No. 50; a little patience would have been rewarded. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
R2.20 · Pick 52 · Tyler Nubin · S · rank 40
They stopped a slide they were happy to see, landing Tyler Nubin in Round 2, Pick 20. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
R2.21 · Pick 53 · Junior Colson · LB · rank 52
A straight-up fair deal on Junior Colson at the 53rd overall pick, value and slot in agreement. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
R3.19 · Pick 83 · Christian Mahogany · OG · rank 98
A conviction pick on Christian Mahogany at the 83rd pick that the board grades a round light. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
R3.25 · Pick 88 · Javon Foster · OT · rank 119
A swing that ignored the value entirely, Javon Foster well ahead of where he belonged. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
R4.3 · Pick 103 · Mekhi Wingo · DT · rank 106
They paid sticker price for Mekhi Wingo in No. 103, and that is fine. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
R5.1 · Pick 137 · Jared Wiley · TE · rank 160
A big swing on Jared Wiley at pick 137, well ahead of any board in the building. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
R5.2 · Pick 138 · Elijah Jones · CB · rank 116
They will replay Elijah Jones at the Round 5 slot for years; that is how good the value is. A minor itch, scratched.
R5.18 · Pick 154 · Jalyx Hunt · DE-EDGE · rank 152
A market-rate edge rusher, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Jalyx Hunt. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
R6.5 · Pick 180 · Trente Jones · OT · rank 194
They went early on Trente Jones in pick No. 180, and the value did not follow. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
R6.18 · Pick 193 · Michael Barrett · LB · rank 235
A real head-scratcher, Michael Barrett in Round 6, Pick 18 is miles ahead of his ranking. Stacking talent where they were already deep.
R7.11 · Pick 231 · Frank Gore Jr. · RB · rank 228
A tidy little value on Frank Gore Jr. in slot 231, a step better than break-even. The roster fit checks out.
