The Patriots spent the pick that matters most on Jayden Daniels, and a roster that has been waiting on a passer can start to take shape.
On value alone, Tracy Jr. makes the weekend a net positive. They will need Spann-Ford to outplay his draft slot in a hurry to justify it. Overpaying at the table undid a lot of the good work elsewhere.
That edge rusher hole did not close this weekend, and it was the biggest one on the wall.
In short, they left a little better than they arrived, which is the whole idea.
Pick-by-Pick
In No. 12 they get a long-term answer under center. A clean fit for the roster.
Amarius Mims in the Round 2 slot is a bargain the rest of the room will envy. The roster fit checks out.
Payton Wilson in pick 68 should not have been possible, and that is the whole point. It adds depth where they could use a little.
A tidy bit of business in pick No. 76, where Kiran Amegadjie graded well above the range. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
They took Jalen McMillan at par in the 103rd overall pick, which is nothing to complain about. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Jarvis Brownlee Jr. at slot 137 is daylight robbery; nobody expected him to last. A minor itch, scratched.
Tyrone Tracy Jr. in Round 6, Pick 5 is a gift, value that borders on unfair. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
You do not let a cornerback like Chau Smith-Wade reach the 193rd pick and blink. They did not. They doubled down on a strength rather than a need.
Brevyn Spann-Ford at pick 231 is the pick scouts circle, and not in a good way. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
