The one hole that towered over the rest is filled. The Patriots spent their marquee pick on Caleb Williams, and for the first time in a while there is a real answer at quarterback.
The Abrams-Draine value carries more weight than any single miss elsewhere. The edge rusher hole is the one line item this class does not answer.
They left with wide receiver solved and the rest of the wish list mostly ticked off.
In sum, a sturdy weekend with one asterisk, the edge rusher spot they never got to.
Pick-by-Pick
In pick No. 2 they get the face of the franchise. A clean fit for the roster.
A top-tier wide receiver at a bargain, Xavier Legette in pick 34, plain and simple. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Steal is underselling it; Kris Abrams-Draine at the 66th pick is a heist with the alarm still ringing. Useful body for a position without much behind the starter.
Matt Goncalves at No. 102 is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
No edge and no loss on Jaheim Bell in slot 139; it is a wash and a sensible one. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
They took Cody Schrader at par in the Round 6 slot, which is nothing to complain about. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Omar Speights in Round 7, Pick 3 is exactly on the number, no argument either way. Useful depth more than a marquee fix.
