New England Patriots

The Patriots found their guy under center in Penix Jr.: A-.

The search is over. The Patriots handed the keys to Michael Penix Jr., and the whole operation now runs on his development.

They robbed the room blind at the table, and it lifts the grade on its own. The Tampa pick alone nudges the whole weekend up a notch.

The Thomas pick is the one the value grade keeps tripping over. That safety hole did not close this weekend, and it was the biggest one on the wall.

In the end it comes back to Michael Penix Jr., and a haul good enough to build on right away.

Pick-by-Pick

R1.17 · Pick 17 · Michael Penix Jr. · QB · rank 9
In pick No. 17 they get their guy under center for the next decade at a price that makes it sweeter.
R2.2 · Pick 34 · Jordan Morgan · OT · rank 26
A quiet steal in No. 34: Jordan Morgan for less than the market said. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
R2.16 · Pick 48 · Kingsley Suamataia · OT · rank 53
They paid sticker price for Kingsley Suamataia in the 48th overall pick, and that is fine. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
R3.4 · Pick 68 · T.J. Tampa · CB · rank 39
T.J. Tampa at slot 68 is daylight robbery; nobody expected him to last. Not urgent, but hardly pointless.
R3.15 · Pick 79 · Braden Fiske · DL · rank 83
Braden Fiske at pick 79 is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
R4.5 · Pick 105 · Jacob Cowing · WR · rank 99
Good price on Jacob Cowing in the Round 4 slot, a hair ahead of his grade with no real quibbles. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
R5.3 · Pick 139 · Ben Sinnott · TE · rank 143
They took Ben Sinnott at par in the 139th pick, which is nothing to complain about. It fills a real need, too.
R6.7 · Pick 182 · Isaiah Davis · RB · rank 184
A straight-up fair deal on Isaiah Davis at Round 6, Pick 7, value and slot in agreement. The roster fit checks out.
R7.4 · Pick 224 · Erick All · TE · rank 215
They read the board right and Erick All was the payoff at the Round 7 slot. A need, and now a little less of one.
R7.12 · Pick 232 · Xavier Thomas · DE-EDGE · rank 255
Xavier Thomas in pick No. 232 is a reach so steep the board needed a second look to believe it. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
