The Patriots ran the phones like sharks, prying loose value on deal after deal until the ledger was lopsided. This is how you run a draft, and the A- reflects it.
The Robinson steal is the beam this whole class leans on. They covered a lot of ground and still skipped interior defensive lineman, which is a strange place to end up.
Every board in the league had McCarthy lower, and that gap is the story.
In the end it comes back to Jordan Morgan, and a haul good enough to build on right away.
Pick-by-Pick
In pick No. 25 they get a cornerstone up front. A clean fit for the roster.
They went early on J.J. McCarthy in pick 34, and the value did not follow. A need, and now a little less of one.
They let Keon Coleman come to them and pounced at No. 41. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Chop Robinson in the 57th overall pick should not have been possible, and that is the whole point. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
A market-rate wide receiver, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Brenden Rice. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
By-the-book stuff, Matt Goncalves at the 104th pick squarely in line with his ranking. The roster fit checks out.
They took Kamal Hadden at par in the Round 4 slot, which is nothing to complain about. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
Isaiah Davis at the 182nd overall pick is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
A straight-up fair deal on J.J. Weaver at pick 229, value and slot in agreement. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
