When a board-topper like Mike Sainristil slides to pick 110, you do not overthink it, and the Patriots did not.
Every deal seemed to tilt their way, which is not luck. The edge rusher hole is the one line item this class does not answer.
Spending an early pick on S-EDGE with edge rusher, interior defensive lineman and other spots open is the decision the grade keeps circling back to.
In the end it comes back to Tyler Guyton, and a haul good enough to build on right away.
Pick-by-Pick
In No. 32 they get a building block for the line, though they paid up to get him. A real need, handled.
A premium they did not need to pay, J.J. McCarthy a notch or two before his time. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Nice patience on Kingsley Suamataia, who had no business lasting to the Round 2 slot. A need, and now a little less of one.
Ja'Lynn Polk in pick 68 is a bargain the rest of the room will envy. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
A market-rate wide receiver, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Jacob Cowing. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
The board fumbled Mike Sainristil all the way to the 110th overall pick, and they scooped it up. It adds depth where they could use a little.
A surprising call. With edge rusher, interior defensive lineman and other spots still to address, they spent pick No. 136 on Jalyx Hunt, a S-EDGE they were not short of.
Isaiah Davis at Round 6, Pick 7 jumps the queue by a touch more than is comfortable. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
They went early on AJ Barner in pick No. 189, and the value did not follow. It fills a real need, too.
