The Patriots spent the pick that matters most on Drake Maye, and a roster that has been waiting on a passer can start to take shape. No fireworks, but a solid B-.
If Okie-Anoma pans out, nobody remembers the price. If not, this is the pick they hear about. Leaving interior defensive lineman unaddressed is the roster risk they will have to answer for in the fall. The McCaffrey value carries more weight than any single miss elsewhere.
Good work on the whole, with interior defensive lineman the one box left unchecked.
Pick-by-Pick
In pick 3 they get their guy under center for the next decade. A real need, handled.
A quiet steal in the 34th overall pick: Kool-Aid McKinstry for less than the market said. Not urgent, but hardly pointless.
They read the board right and Malachi Corley was the payoff at No. 68. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Matt Goncalves in the 104th pick is the kind of reach that only looks good if he outplays it. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Dallin Holker at Round 4, Pick 36 is the pick scouts circle, and not in a good way. A need, and now a little less of one.
Luke McCaffrey slid further than he should have, and the Round 6 slot is lovely value for the wide receiver. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
This one needs a full-page explanation: Eyabi Okie-Anoma in slot 229, miles early. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
