You build a draft on nights like this. Keon Coleman had no business being available in Round 3, Pick 19, and the Patriots did the only sane thing and turned in the card. The sum of the weekend is a deserved A-.
Reaching for Hunt left real value on the table behind him. The dealing alone would carry a lesser class. The Hunt pick reads as want over need, and the roster will feel it at edge rusher, interior defensive lineman and other spots.
For all the activity, edge rusher went untouched, which is hard to explain.
In the end it comes back to Cooper DeJean, and a haul good enough to build on right away.
Pick-by-Pick
In the 19th overall pick they get a press-man option on the boundary. Need was not the driver here.
Bo Nix in No. 34 lands just on the right side of the ledger. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
No edge and no loss on Kingsley Suamataia in pick 52; it is a wash and a sensible one. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Patrick Paul at the Round 3 slot is right where the board had him, plain and simple. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Keon Coleman in slot 83 is the kind of fall that makes a whole class. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
They paid sticker price for Braelon Allen in Round 4, Pick 4, and that is fine. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
A surprising call. With edge rusher, interior defensive lineman and other spots still to address, they spent the 136th pick on Jalyx Hunt, a S-EDGE they were not short of.
Nice patience on Kamal Hadden, who had no business lasting to pick No. 179. They doubled down on a strength rather than a need.
Nothing to complain about; Tyler Owens went a shade earlier than his grade, which is fine. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
A clean, defensible pick in pick 253 with a little surplus value in Ethan Driskell. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
