Call it larceny. Josh Newton sat on the board until the 182nd pick, and the Patriots did not need to be asked twice.
They will need Hunt to outplay his draft slot in a hurry to justify it. That edge rusher hole did not close this weekend, and it was the biggest one on the wall.
All told, a solid class that does its job everywhere but edge rusher.
Pick-by-Pick
A market-rate offensive lineman, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Joe Alt. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
A reach on J.J. McCarthy in pick No. 34; the board had better options right there. It fills a real need, too.
They stopped a slide they were happy to see, landing Kingsley Suamataia in slot 68. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
A tidy bit of business in the 103rd overall pick, where DJ James graded well above the range. It adds depth where they could use a little.
Jalyx Hunt at pick 137 is a steep price for a hunch, hard to square with any board. A fine player at a spot low on the priority list.
A cornerback of that caliber at the Round 6 slot is the definition of value, full stop. Pure best-available; the position was not exactly begging.
Circle this one: Jarrian Jones at the 193rd pick is a fall that decides a draft. Stacking talent where they were already deep.
A clean, defensible pick in No. 231 with a little surplus value in Tip Reiman. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Tyler Owens in pick No. 242 is a bargain the rest of the room will envy. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
