They finally answered the question that shadows every other one. J.J. McCarthy is the Patriots' quarterback, full stop. Solid and sensible more than spectacular: a B.

If one pick saves this weekend, it is McCormick. Reaching for DeLoach left real value on the table behind him.

A whole weekend of picks and wide receiver is somehow still a want.

In sum, a sturdy weekend with one asterisk, the wide receiver spot they never got to.

Pick-by-Pick

R1.23 · Pick 23 · J.J. McCarthy · QB · rank 29
In pick 23 they get their guy under center for the next decade. A clean fit for the roster.
R2.2 · Pick 34 · JC Latham · OT · rank 16
JC Latham in the Round 2 slot is the kind of fall that makes a whole class. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
R2.3 · Pick 35 · Tyler Guyton · OT · rank 27
Tyler Guyton at the 35th overall pick is the sort of value that quietly wins a weekend. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
R2.27 · Pick 59 · Chris Braswell · LB-EDGE · rank 42
A quiet steal in the 59th pick: Chris Braswell for less than the market said. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
R3.4 · Pick 68 · Payton Wilson · LB · rank 52
A tidy bit of business in Round 3, Pick 4, where Payton Wilson graded well above the range. A quiet depth add at a thin-ish spot.
R3.23 · Pick 86 · Cade Stover · TE · rank 77
They stopped a slide they were happy to see, landing Cade Stover in slot 86. A need, and now a little less of one.
R4.3 · Pick 103 · Khyree Jackson · CB · rank 85
They barely believed it either: Khyree Jackson still on the board at pick No. 103. Useful body for a position without much behind the starter.
R5.1 · Pick 137 · Jalyx Hunt · S-EDGE · rank 151
The board had cheaper options than Jalyx Hunt at No. 137, and it noticed. The roster logic is harder to follow.
R6.5 · Pick 180 · Mason McCormick · OT · rank 146
Mason McCormick in No. 180 is a gift, value that borders on unfair. It fills a real need, too.
R6.18 · Pick 193 · Daijun Edwards · RB · rank 188
Nothing to complain about; Daijun Edwards went a shade earlier than his grade, which is fine. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
R7.11 · Pick 231 · Kalen DeLoach · S · rank 247
They paid up for Kalen DeLoach at the 231st overall pick when waiting would have done the job. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
