The best pick of the weekend was also the simplest. The Patriots watched Xavier Worthy slide 30 picks past his grade and did not hesitate. They executed a plan and it shows in the A-.
The trade ledger is the best part of the whole weekend. The edge rusher hole is the one line item this class does not answer.
Bottom line, with Rome Odunze leading the way, this is a class that should pay off fast and rarely be regretted.
Pick-by-Pick
In No. 23 they get a matchup problem out wide, and a steal at that. Exactly the need they had to hit.
J.J. McCarthy in the Round 2 slot is the kind of reach that only looks good if he outplays it. A need, and now a little less of one.
They took Kingsley Suamataia at par in Round 2, Pick 27, which is nothing to complain about. It fills a real need, too.
No edge and no loss on Patrick Paul in pick No. 68; it is a wash and a sensible one. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
A wide receiver of that caliber at the 86th overall pick is the definition of value, full stop. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Braelon Allen at slot 104 is right where the board had him, plain and simple. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
They paid sticker price for Theo Johnson in pick 136, and that is fine. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Dwight McGlothern at the 182nd pick nudges the ledger their way without any fuss. Useful body for a position without much behind the starter.
A tidy bit of business in slot 229, where Garret Greenfield graded well above the range. The roster fit checks out.
