They finally answered the question that shadows every other one. Drake Maye is the Patriots' quarterback, full stop. A sturdy weekend that grades out a B-.
A whole weekend of picks and edge rusher is somehow still a want. The Bertrand reach is the anchor dragging on the value grade.
Williams at that cost is the sort of edge that compounds over a roster.
All told, a draft that does its job without fuss, and there is real value in that.
Pick-by-Pick
In the 3rd pick they get their quarterback of the future at fair value. A real need, handled.
Good price on Tyler Guyton in Round 2, Pick 2, a hair ahead of his grade with no real quibbles. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
They took Patrick Paul at par in pick 68, which is nothing to complain about. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
A slide stopped in pick No. 106, with Brenden Rice worth more than the price. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Fair-plus on Jamari Thrash, a quiet win that adds up over a draft. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
They read the board right and Kamal Hadden was the payoff at No. 180. Useful body for a position without much behind the starter.
Jordan Jefferson at the 182nd overall pick is right where the board had him, plain and simple. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
They reached a country mile for JD Bertrand at slot 198, and the board is aghast. Not urgent, but hardly pointless.
A tidy bit of business in Round 7, Pick 11, where Evan Williams graded well above the range. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
A quiet steal in the Round 7 slot: Frank Gore Jr. for less than the market said. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
