The Patriots spent real capital to be 85 picks early on Shaun Dolac, and the board is going to hold them to it.
Getting Tuten where they did is the sort of value that quietly makes a class. The trades bled value they could not afford to lose. A whole weekend of picks and interior defensive lineman is somehow still a want.
Stockpiling next year's capital is patient, if unglamorous, asset work.
In short, they left a little better than they arrived, which is the whole idea.
Pick-by-Pick
In slot 12 they get a home-run threat at receiver. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
By-the-book stuff, Jonah Savaiinaea at the 38th pick squarely in line with his ranking. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
The board had cheaper options than Ozzy Trapilo at Round 3, Pick 5, and it noticed. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
They reached into another round for Ashton Gillotte, and the board is nowhere close to agreeing. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Jaylin Noel slipping to the 106th overall pick is the kind of luck good rooms make for themselves. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Jared Wilson in pick 144 is a gift, value that borders on unfair. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
You do not let a cornerback like O'Donnell Fortune reach Round 5, Pick 36 and blink. They did not. A minor itch, scratched.
They will replay Bhayshul Tuten at pick 217 for years; that is how good the value is. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
The board screamed and they did not listen, reaching into the next round for Hayden Conner. A need, and now a little less of one.
Shaun Dolac in the 238th overall pick is a reach so steep the board needed a second look to believe it. A minor need, but a need all the same.
