The one hole that towered over the rest is filled. The Patriots spent their marquee pick on Drake Maye, and for the first time in a while there is a real answer at quarterback.
With interior defensive lineman, safety and other spots unsolved, spending premium capital on cornerback is the choice that costs them. The interior defensive lineman spot stays a question, and it was the one they most needed an answer at.
Good work on the whole, with interior defensive lineman the one box left unchecked.
Pick-by-Pick
Drake Maye at pick No. 4 is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Ladd McConkey in the 34th pick is exactly on the number, no argument either way. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
They paid sticker price for Patrick Paul in No. 68, and that is fine. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
The board had Khyree Jackson higher than slot 103, and the cornerback fell to them anyway. Not urgent, but hardly pointless.
They bypassed pressing needs at interior defensive lineman, safety and other spots to take Jarvis Brownlee Jr., a cornerback that was not the priority.
A market-rate offensive lineman, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Roger Rosengarten. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Grayson Murphy in Round 6, Pick 5 lands just on the right side of the ledger. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Frank Gore Jr. at the 231st overall pick is a sound buy, the sort that quietly helps a class. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
