The search is over. The Patriots handed the keys to Drake Maye, and the whole operation now runs on his development. Solid and sensible more than spectacular: a B.
The Legette pick alone nudges the whole weekend up a notch. For all the activity, safety went untouched, which is hard to explain.
Reaching for Harrell left real value on the table behind him.
In sum, a sturdy weekend with one asterisk, the safety spot they never got to.
Pick-by-Pick
Drake Maye in the 3rd pick is exactly on the number, no argument either way. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Laiatu Latu at Round 2, Pick 2 is daylight robbery; nobody expected him to last. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Taking Xavier Legette in pick No. 68 is close to grand larceny; a wide receiver that good had no business lasting this long. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
They took Leonard Taylor III at par in the 103rd overall pick, which is nothing to complain about. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
A reasonable price with a little left over, Christian Jones in the Round 5 slot. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
They stopped a slide they were happy to see, landing Walter Rouse in pick 180. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
They went early on Jaylen Harrell in No. 193, and the value did not follow. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
They paid sticker price for Tayvion Robinson in slot 231, and that is fine. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
