New England Patriots

The Patriots let Mukuba fall into their laps, and walked away with a B.

Somewhere a general manager is explaining how Andrew Mukuba got past him. The Patriots do not have to explain a thing at the Round 4 slot. It nets out to a B, which feels about right.

They robbed the room blind at the table, and it lifts the grade on its own. The Nesbit pick is the one the value grade keeps tripping over.

The Campbell pick is fine in a vacuum, less so with edge rusher, interior defensive lineman and other spots still on the board. They will regret leaving edge rusher for another day if the season turns on it.

In sum, a sensible class that nudges the roster the right way.

Pick-by-Pick

R1.14 · Pick 14 · Luther Burden III · WR · rank 15
A market-rate wide receiver, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Luther Burden III. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
R2.6 · Pick 38 · Benjamin Morrison · CB · rank 44
They took Benjamin Morrison at par in pick 38, which is nothing to complain about. Not urgent, but hardly pointless.
R2.12 · Pick 44 · Jalon Walker · LB · rank 20
A linebacker of that caliber at pick No. 44 is the definition of value, full stop. Useful depth more than a marquee fix.
R3.5 · Pick 69 · Jihaad Campbell · LB · rank 38
They zigged when the board said zag, taking Jihaad Campbell at linebacker with edge rusher, interior defensive lineman and other spots open.
R3.37 · Pick 101 · Devin Neal · RB · rank 79
A top-tier running back at a bargain, Devin Neal in the 101st pick, plain and simple. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
R4.3 · Pick 104 · Malachi Moore · S · rank 86
Taking Malachi Moore in No. 104 is close to grand larceny; a safety that good had no business lasting this long. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
R4.17 · Pick 118 · Andrew Mukuba · S · rank 68
The board fumbled Andrew Mukuba all the way to slot 118, and they scooped it up. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
R5.3 · Pick 140 · Pat Bryant · WR · rank 143
By-the-book stuff, Pat Bryant at the 140th overall pick squarely in line with his ranking. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
R7.1 · Pick 217 · Terrance Ferguson · TE · rank 221
Terrance Ferguson at the 217th overall pick is right where the board had him, plain and simple. It fills a real need, too.
R7.4 · Pick 220 · Bryson Nesbit · TE · rank 246
Bryson Nesbit at the Round 7 slot is an overdraft of the loud, memorable kind. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
