You can fall in love with a player. You are not supposed to marry him in the wrong round. The Patriots did exactly that with Zion Logue in No. 231. A sturdy weekend that grades out a B-.
Whatever Drake Maye becomes, the front office has tied its fortunes to the answer. They banked enough surplus on Laumea to cover a lot of smaller sins.
They will regret leaving safety for another day if the season turns on it. Job largely done: edge rusher settled and 6 of 8 of the wish list covered.
A workmanlike haul that should hold up just fine.
Pick-by-Pick
In Round 1, Pick 3 they get their quarterback of the future. A real need, handled.
Value said wait; Kingsley Suamataia in pick 34 says they were not listening. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
A conviction pick on Javon Baker at No. 68 that the board grades a round light. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
A straight-up fair deal on Gabriel Murphy at pick No. 103, value and slot in agreement. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Nice patience on Jarrian Jones, who had no business lasting to slot 137. A minor itch, scratched.
Rasheen Ali at the Round 6 slot jumps the queue by a touch more than is comfortable. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
A offensive lineman of that caliber at pick 193 is the definition of value, full stop. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
A wild overpay on Zion Logue in the 231st pick, the sort that defines a class for the wrong reasons. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
