Start where it matters. The Patriots took Michael Penix Jr. to run the offense for the next decade, and every other decision this weekend bends around that one. Solid and sensible more than spectacular: a B+.
That Tracy Jr. pick is the receipt they will wave around later. That edge rusher hole did not close this weekend, and it was the biggest one on the wall.
Adding Braxton Jones by trade rounds out the weekend beyond the rookies.
A workmanlike haul that should hold up just fine.
Pick-by-Pick
Michael Penix Jr. in the 9th pick is exactly on the number, no argument either way. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Amarius Mims at Round 2, Pick 2 is the sort of value that quietly wins a weekend. It fills a real need, too.
Taking Junior Colson in the Round 3 slot is close to grand larceny; a linebacker that good had no business lasting this long. It adds depth where they could use a little.
Malik Washington in slot 103 is the kind of fall that makes a whole class. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Matt Goncalves in pick 137 should not have been possible, and that is the whole point. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
They barely believed it either: Tyrone Tracy Jr. still on the board at the 180th overall pick. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Nice patience on Kamal Hadden, who had no business lasting to No. 193. Useful body for a position without much behind the starter.
Circle this one: Blake Watson at pick No. 231 is a fall that decides a draft. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
