The Patriots spent the pick that matters most on Drake Maye, and a roster that has been waiting on a passer can start to take shape. The bottom line is a respectable B.
For all the activity, edge rusher went untouched, which is hard to explain. Reaching for Laube left real value on the table behind him. However the rest shakes out, Taylor-Demerson at that price is a win they earned.
A modest surplus at the table, banked quietly.
All told, a solid class that does its job everywhere but edge rusher.
Pick-by-Pick
In Round 1, Pick 3 they get a passer to set the clock by. A clean fit for the roster.
By-the-book stuff, Xavier Legette at the 37th overall pick squarely in line with his ranking. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
A market-rate running back, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Jaylen Wright. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Value with a capital V on Dadrion Taylor-Demerson in No. 103, a genuine coup. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
They let Dominick Puni come to them and pounced at pick No. 105. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
They took Jarrian Jones at par in slot 137, which is nothing to complain about. A minor need, but a need all the same.
They jumped the gun on Dylan Laube, taking him earlier than his grade liked. A need, and now a little less of one.
Javion Cohen slipping to the 180th pick is the kind of luck good rooms make for themselves. It fills a real need, too.
Jared Wiley at the 193rd overall pick jumps the queue by a touch more than is comfortable. The roster fit checks out.
A straight-up fair deal on Trevin Wallace at pick 231, value and slot in agreement. A minor itch, scratched.
