The one hole that towered over the rest is filled. The Patriots spent their marquee pick on Drake Maye, and for the first time in a while there is a real answer at quarterback. More right than wrong, and a B to match.
Leaving edge rusher unaddressed is the roster risk they will have to answer for in the fall. On value alone, Smith makes the weekend a net positive.
The cost of the Laube reach is exactly the players who went right after him. Small wins on the phones, but wins all the same.
Not a headline-grabber, but a perfectly good weekend's work.
Pick-by-Pick
In Round 1, Pick 3 they get the arm they will build around at fair value. A real need, handled.
Xavier Legette at No. 43 nudges the ledger their way without any fuss. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Kiran Amegadjie in pick 68 is fair value, right on his grade. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Cade Stover in the 74th overall pick is exactly on the number, no argument either way. It fills a real need, too.
A tidy little value on Cam Hart in the Round 4 slot, a step better than break-even. Useful depth more than a marquee fix.
A big swing on Dylan Laube at pick No. 137, well ahead of any board in the building. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
AJ Barner at slot 180 is the sort of value that quietly wins a weekend. The roster fit checks out.
Tykee Smith in the 186th pick should not have been possible, and that is the whole point. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
No drama and no debate, Trente Jones went about where he belonged in the 193rd overall pick. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
JD Bertrand slid further than he should have, and the Round 7 slot is lovely value for the linebacker. A minor itch, scratched.
