They finally answered the question that shadows every other one. Caleb Williams is the Patriots' quarterback, full stop. No fireworks, but a solid B-.
The Polk pick alone nudges the whole weekend up a notch. If Vidal pans out, nobody remembers the price. If not, this is the pick they hear about. That interior defensive lineman hole did not close this weekend, and it was the biggest one on the wall.
In sum, a sensible class that nudges the roster the right way.
Pick-by-Pick
In Round 1, Pick 3 they get a franchise quarterback at fair value. A clean fit for the roster.
A straight-up fair deal on Xavier Legette at the 34th overall pick, value and slot in agreement. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
A market-rate offensive lineman, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Kiran Amegadjie. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Ja'Lynn Polk in the 103rd pick is the kind of fall that makes a whole class. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
No drama and no debate, Jarrian Jones went about where he belonged in pick No. 137. Not urgent, but hardly pointless.
Khristian Boyd in slot 180 lands just on the right side of the ledger. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
A premium they did not need to pay, Jared Wiley a notch or two before his time. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
A real head-scratcher, Kimani Vidal in the Round 7 slot is miles ahead of his ranking. It fills a real need, too.
