After circling the position for what felt like forever, the Patriots committed. Drake Maye is the quarterback now, and the roster gets built to his timeline. A sturdy weekend that grades out a B.
They punted on edge rusher, and it is the miss that keeps the grade honest. That Williams pick is the receipt they will wave around later. They went 6 of 8 on their needs, which is most of what a draft is for.
Solid rather than spectacular, and there is nothing wrong with that.
Pick-by-Pick
In the 3rd pick they get the arm they will build around at fair value.
A quiet steal in the 34th overall pick: Brian Thomas Jr. for less than the market said. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
A straight-up fair deal on Cade Stover at pick No. 78, value and slot in agreement. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
They paid sticker price for Matt Goncalves in No. 100, and that is fine. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
A reasonable price with a little left over, Christian Mahogany in pick 103. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
James Williams in Round 5, Pick 1 is a bargain the rest of the room will envy. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Jordan Jefferson in slot 180 is exactly on the number, no argument either way. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
No drama and no debate, Trevin Wallace went about where he belonged in the Round 7 slot. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
