The Patriots spent the pick that matters most on Drake Maye, and a roster that has been waiting on a passer can start to take shape. It nets out to a B+, which feels about right.
They won the margins on every swap, and it adds up fast. They covered a lot of ground and still skipped edge rusher, which is a strange place to end up.
That James pick is the receipt they will wave around later. They are betting Wiley proves the room right and everyone else wrong.
Nothing here to lose sleep over, and plenty to feel decent about.
Pick-by-Pick
In the 5th pick they get the arm they will build around at fair value.
Nice patience on Troy Fautanu, who had no business lasting to the 34th overall pick. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
A tidy little value on Edgerrin Cooper in the Round 2 slot, a step better than break-even. Useful body for a position without much behind the starter.
Patrick Paul in pick 68 is fair value, right on his grade. The roster fit checks out.
No drama and no debate, Ja'Lynn Polk went about where he belonged in Round 3, Pick 5. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
By-the-book stuff, Trey Benson at slot 96 squarely in line with his ranking. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
A tidy bit of business in No. 104, where DJ James graded well above the range. It thickens a room that could stand to be thicker.
A reach for Roger Rosengarten in pick No. 136; a little patience would have been rewarded. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
They left a pile of value on the table to take Jared Wiley this early at the 182nd overall pick. A need, and now a little less of one.
They paid sticker price for Trevin Wallace in the Round 7 slot, and that is fine. A want more than a need, though you can never have too many.
