The search is over. The Patriots handed the keys to Caleb Williams, and the whole operation now runs on his development. The final tally is a middling C+.
They will regret leaving edge rusher for another day if the season turns on it. The Smith pick reads as want over need, and the roster will feel it at edge rusher, interior defensive lineman and other spots.
They gave back a little on the phones for the right to move.
The verdict is a shrug for now, with the swing picks left to write the real ending.
Pick-by-Pick
In the 3rd pick they get their quarterback of the future at fair value.
They stopped a slide they were happy to see, landing Jordan Morgan in the 43rd overall pick. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Xavier Legette in slot 68 is exactly on the number, no argument either way. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
By-the-book stuff, Braelon Allen at pick 102 squarely in line with his ranking. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Hard to square with the roster. With positions of obvious need still on the board, Maason Smith adds a DT-EDGE and leaves edge rusher, interior defensive lineman and other spots untouched.
A straight-up fair deal on Jaylin Simpson at Round 4, Pick 36, value and slot in agreement. A minor itch, scratched.
Good price on Dwight McGlothern in No. 179, a hair ahead of his grade with no real quibbles. Insurance at a position that did not really ask for it.
The board had Delmar Glaze higher than pick No. 192, and the offensive lineman fell to them anyway. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
They did well to land Frank Gore Jr. in pick 231, just ahead of his grade. The roster fit checks out.
