They finally answered the question that shadows every other one. Drake Maye is the Patriots' quarterback, full stop. No fireworks, but a solid B-.
Whatever else happened, they won the night they took Liufau. Leaving edge rusher unaddressed is the roster risk they will have to answer for in the fall. The roster is better shaped than it was, with wide receiver chief among the fixes.
The offense got the lion's share of the attention.
In sum, a sturdy weekend with one asterisk, the edge rusher spot they never got to.
Pick-by-Pick
In Round 1, Pick 3 they get a passer to set the clock by. A real need, handled.
A reasonable price with a little left over, Brian Thomas Jr. in pick 34. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Kingsley Suamataia at pick No. 68 is a sound buy, the sort that quietly helps a class. It fills a real need, too.
They paid sticker price for Braelon Allen in the 103rd overall pick, and that is fine. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Value with a capital V on Ben Sinnott in the Round 5 slot, a genuine coup. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Taking Dwight McGlothern in slot 180 is close to grand larceny; a cornerback that good had no business lasting this long. A quiet depth add at a thin-ish spot.
Marist Liufau in the 193rd pick is a gift, value that borders on unfair. Not urgent, but hardly pointless.
Caedan Wallace in No. 231 should not have been possible, and that is the whole point. The roster fit checks out.
