The Patriots torched the value chart for Frank Gore Jr., taking him 44 spots sooner than anyone had him slotted. The bottom line is a respectable B.

Overpaying at the table undid a lot of the good work elsewhere. They banked enough surplus on Fautanu to cover a lot of smaller sins.

The edge rusher hole is the one line item this class does not answer. It is a bet on later, and a defensible one for a team playing the long game.

Good work on the whole, with edge rusher the one box left unchecked.

Pick-by-Pick

R1.9 · Pick 9 · Rome Odunze · WR · rank 10
In the Round 1 slot they get a weapon on the perimeter. Exactly the need they had to hit.
R2.8 · Pick 40 · Troy Fautanu · OT · rank 21
They barely believed it either: Troy Fautanu still on the board at No. 40. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
R3.8 · Pick 72 · Jaylen Wright · RB · rank 71
No drama and no debate, Jaylen Wright went about where he belonged in pick No. 72. It fills a real need, too.
R3.11 · Pick 75 · Cade Stover · TE · rank 74
They paid sticker price for Cade Stover in slot 75, and that is fine. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
R4.3 · Pick 103 · Spencer Rattler · QB · rank 117
They liked Spencer Rattler enough to skip the value, taking him in the 103rd pick. A need, and now a little less of one.
R4.35 · Pick 135 · Jarrian Jones · CB · rank 136
Jarrian Jones in pick 135 is fair value, right on his grade. It thickens a room that could stand to be thicker.
R5.1 · Pick 137 · Jaylin Simpson · CB · rank 137
A straight-up fair deal on Jaylin Simpson at pick 137, value and slot in agreement. Depth on depth, at a spot that was hardly crying out.
R5.16 · Pick 152 · Tommy Eichenberg · LB · rank 145
Tommy Eichenberg in Round 5, Pick 16 is fine work, a shade of surplus and no downside. It adds depth where they could use a little.
R6.5 · Pick 180 · Jordan Jefferson · DT · rank 185
By-the-book stuff, Jordan Jefferson at slot 180 squarely in line with his ranking. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
R6.10 · Pick 185 · Frank Gore Jr. · RB · rank 229
A big swing on Frank Gore Jr. at the 185th pick, well ahead of any board in the building. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
R6.18 · Pick 193 · Jha'Quan Jackson · WR · rank 179
A slide stopped in pick No. 193, with Jha'Quan Jackson worth more than the price. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
R7.11 · Pick 231 · JD Bertrand · LB · rank 221
They let JD Bertrand come to them and pounced at No. 231. A want more than a need, though you can never have too many.
R7.39 · Pick 257 · Jalen Sundell · OT · rank 247
A tidy bit of business in the Round 7 slot, where Jalen Sundell graded well above the range. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
