The one hole that towered over the rest is filled. The Patriots spent their marquee pick on Jayden Daniels, and for the first time in a while there is a real answer at quarterback. They executed a plan and it shows in the A-.
The phones were where this weekend was really won. They banked enough surplus on James to cover a lot of smaller sins. If this class has a fault line, it runs straight through edge rusher.
The cost of the Wiley reach is exactly the players who went right after him.
In the end it comes back to Jayden Daniels, and a haul good enough to build on right away.
Pick-by-Pick
In Round 1, Pick 7 they get a franchise quarterback at fair value. A clean fit for the roster.
They took Jordan Morgan at par in No. 34, which is nothing to complain about. It fills a real need, too.
Edgerrin Cooper in the Round 2 slot is fair value, right on his grade. Useful depth more than a marquee fix.
Malachi Corley at the 68th overall pick is the sort of value that quietly wins a weekend. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
DJ James slipping to pick No. 104 is the kind of luck good rooms make for themselves. It thickens a room that could stand to be thicker.
By-the-book stuff, Christian Jones at the 136th pick squarely in line with his ranking. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
They reached a country mile for Jared Wiley at slot 182, and the board is aghast. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Trevin Wallace at pick 229 is right where the board had him, plain and simple. Stacking talent where they were already deep.
