New England Patriots

The Patriots left with their quarterback, and a B- to match.

They finally answered the question that shadows every other one. Drake Maye is the Patriots' quarterback, full stop. Good, not great, and the B- says as much.

They punted on edge rusher, and it is the miss that keeps the grade honest. They banked enough surplus on Guerendo to cover a lot of smaller sins.

Good work on the whole, with edge rusher the one box left unchecked.

Pick-by-Pick

R1.3 · Pick 3 · Drake Maye · QB · rank 7
In slot 3 they get their guy under center for the next decade at fair value.
R2.2 · Pick 34 · Ladd McConkey · WR · rank 34
Ladd McConkey at Round 2, Pick 2 is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
R3.4 · Pick 68 · Patrick Paul · OT · rank 69
They paid sticker price for Patrick Paul in No. 68, and that is fine. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
R4.3 · Pick 103 · Brenden Rice · WR · rank 97
They did well to land Brenden Rice in the Round 4 slot, just ahead of his grade. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
R5.1 · Pick 137 · Isaac Guerendo · RB · rank 128
A quiet steal in the 137th pick: Isaac Guerendo for less than the market said. The roster fit checks out.
R6.5 · Pick 180 · Tip Reiman · TE · rank 182
Tip Reiman in the 180th overall pick is fair value, right on his grade. It fills a real need, too.
R6.18 · Pick 193 · Trente Jones · OT · rank 194
No edge and no loss on Trente Jones in pick 193; it is a wash and a sensible one. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
R7.11 · Pick 231 · Trevin Wallace · LB · rank 233
Trevin Wallace at pick No. 231 is right where the board had him, plain and simple. Useful depth more than a marquee fix.
