The Patriots spent the pick that matters most on Drake Maye, and a roster that has been waiting on a passer can start to take shape.
The dealing alone would carry a lesser class. That edge rusher hole did not close this weekend, and it was the biggest one on the wall. That McCaffrey pick is the receipt they will wave around later.
The Trey McBride pickup adds a known quantity to a class of unknowns.
All told, a solid class that does its job everywhere but edge rusher.
Pick-by-Pick
In the 4th overall pick they get the face of the franchise. A clean fit for the roster.
Troy Fautanu slid further than he should have, and pick 34 is lovely value for the offensive lineman. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Kingsley Suamataia is a better player than the 68th pick suggests; smart patience, rewarded. It fills a real need, too.
Brenden Rice in pick No. 104 is fine work, a shade of surplus and no downside. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Ben Sinnott at No. 136 nudges the ledger their way without any fuss. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Nice patience on Luke McCaffrey, who had no business lasting to slot 182. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
A reasonable price with a little left over, Tanner McLachlan in the Round 7 slot. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
