The weekend has a hole in the middle of it named interior defensive lineman, a need the Patriots walked right past. It nets out to a B, which feels about right.
Every board in the league had Harrell lower, and that gap is the story. Getting Barner where they did is the sort of value that quietly makes a class.
In short, they left a little better than they arrived, which is the whole idea.
Pick-by-Pick
In the Round 1 slot they get a blindside protector. A real need, handled.
By-the-book stuff, Ladd McConkey at pick No. 34 squarely in line with his ranking. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Roman Wilson in the 47th overall pick is fair value, right on his grade. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Jaylen Wright at pick 68 is right where the board had him, plain and simple. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
No edge and no loss on Braelon Allen in No. 103; it is a wash and a sensible one. It fills a real need, too.
A market-rate cornerback, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Jarrian Jones. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
The board had AJ Barner higher than Round 6, Pick 5, and the tight end fell to them anyway. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
A premium they did not need to pay, Jaylen Harrell a notch or two before his time. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Trevin Wallace in the Round 7 slot is exactly on the number, no argument either way. Useful depth more than a marquee fix.
