There is reaching, and then there is Seth McLaughlin at pick No. 228. The Patriots jumped the board by 25 and dared it to prove them wrong. It nets out to a B-, which feels about right.
The Ayomanor value carries more weight than any single miss elsewhere. Edge rusher is handled and the depth chart looks a good deal healthier for it. The trenches got the money picks, top to bottom.
Nothing gained and nothing lost at the table.
Bottom line, more hits than misses and a roster nudged the right way.
Pick-by-Pick
In the 3rd pick they get a blindside protector. A real need, handled.
A straight-up fair deal on Deone Walker at the 41st overall pick, value and slot in agreement. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Xavier Nwankpa in No. 72 lands just on the right side of the ledger. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Riley Leonard in pick No. 98 is exactly on the number, no argument either way. A need, and now a little less of one.
They jumped the gun on Raheim Sanders, taking him earlier than his grade liked. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Fair-plus on Shavon Revel Jr., a quiet win that adds up over a draft. A minor itch, scratched.
Nice patience on Elic Ayomanor, who had no business lasting to Round 5, Pick 6. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Terrance Ferguson at pick 216 is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
A reach for Collin Oliver in the 218th pick; a little patience would have been rewarded. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
The board screamed and they did not listen, reaching into the next round for Seth McLaughlin. It fills a real need, too.
