The Patriots looked at the value chart, folded it up, and took Spencer Rattler at No. 68 regardless, 22 picks early. A dependable weekend that grades out a B-.
They covered a lot of ground and still skipped edge rusher, which is a strange place to end up. The Zinter value carries more weight than any single miss elsewhere.
On the needs board they went 6 of 8, with wide receiver the one that mattered most.
All told, a solid class that does its job everywhere but edge rusher.
Pick-by-Pick
In pick No. 3 they get a mismatch in the passing game. A real need, handled.
A straight-up fair deal on Xavier Worthy at the Round 2 slot, value and slot in agreement. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Value said wait; Spencer Rattler in pick 68 says they were not listening. It fills a real need, too.
A tidy bit of business in Round 4, Pick 4, where Zak Zinter graded well above the range. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
James Williams at slot 136 is right where the board had him, plain and simple. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Cody Schrader is a better player than the 182nd pick suggests; smart patience, rewarded. The roster fit checks out.
A premium they did not need to pay, Taulia Tagovailoa a notch or two before his time. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
