The Patriots spent the weekend waiting on one name, and it fell: Cam Skattebo, the No. 109 name on the board, in the 220th pick.
If Griffith pans out, nobody remembers the price. If not, this is the pick they hear about. For all the activity, wide receiver went untouched, which is hard to explain. They left with edge rusher solved and the rest of the wish list mostly ticked off.
Building through the lines is a philosophy, and they stuck to it.
In short, they left a little better than they arrived, which is the whole idea.
Pick-by-Pick
In pick 4 they get a quarterback's worst nightmare. The biggest hole, addressed.
They did well to land Harold Fannin Jr. in pick No. 38, just ahead of his grade. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Somehow Jihaad Campbell was still sitting there in slot 69, and they pounced on premier linebacker value. Useful depth more than a marquee fix.
Good price on Andrew Mukuba in No. 77, a hair ahead of his grade with no real quibbles. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
A real head-scratcher, Ozzy Trapilo in Round 4, Pick 3 is miles ahead of his ranking. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Danny Stutsman in the Round 5 slot is a gift, value that borders on unfair. A want dressed up as a pick, at a spot they had covered.
Raheim Sanders in the 217th overall pick should not have been possible, and that is the whole point. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Cam Skattebo at the 220th pick is a first-round grade at a bargain-bin price, no notes. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
This one needs a full-page explanation: Thor Griffith in slot 238, miles early. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
