The Patriots clearly saw something nobody else did in Collin Oliver, taking him 35 picks ahead of his grade. The board is not convinced. No fireworks, but a solid B.
They covered a lot of ground and still skipped wide receiver, which is a strange place to end up. Landing McCord that late papers over a lot of smaller sins. The roster is better shaped than it was, with edge rusher chief among the fixes.
Not a headline-grabber, but a perfectly good weekend's work.
Pick-by-Pick
In the 8th overall pick they get a plug-and-play piece up front. A real need, handled.
They let Deone Walker come to them and pounced at slot 39. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
They liked Kaleb Johnson enough to skip the value, taking him in pick No. 41. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
They took Nick Emmanwori at par in pick 76, which is nothing to complain about. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
No drama and no debate, Maxwell Hairston went about where he belonged in No. 86. A quiet depth add at a thin-ish spot.
Tyler Warren in the Round 4 slot is fine work, a shade of surplus and no downside. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
A market-rate offensive lineman, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Parker Brailsford. The roster fit checks out.
Woody Marks in the 144th pick is fair value, right on his grade. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Kyle McCord slipping to No. 201 is the kind of luck good rooms make for themselves. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
They talked themselves into Collin Oliver at the Round 7 slot, and the board did not agree. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
PJ Williams at pick No. 220 is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Value with a capital V on J.C. Davis in pick 236, a genuine coup. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
