The Patriots spent the weekend waiting on one name, and it fell: Dylan Sampson, the No. 42 name on the board, in the Round 5 slot.
They will regret leaving interior defensive lineman for another day if the season turns on it. They went 5 of 8 on their needs, which is most of what a draft is for. The skill positions did well by the weekend.
All told, a draft that does its job without fuss, and there is real value in that.
Pick-by-Pick
In the Round 1 slot they get a weapon on the perimeter at fair value. The biggest hole, addressed.
They robbed the room for Abdul Carter here, a fall nobody at the table saw coming. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
They barely believed it either: Nick Emmanwori still on the board at Round 3, Pick 4. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
A top-tier running back at a bargain, Omarion Hampton in pick 83, plain and simple. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
A edge rusher of that caliber at the 105th pick is the definition of value, full stop. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
The board fumbled Dylan Sampson all the way to pick No. 142, and they scooped it up. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Jaishawn Barham at slot 220 is the sort of value that quietly wins a weekend. A minor itch, scratched.
Taking Raheim Sanders in the 223rd overall pick is close to grand larceny; a running back that good had no business lasting this long. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Terrance Ferguson in Round 7, Pick 27 is a gift, value that borders on unfair. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
