Thirty-one other rooms let Smael Mondon Jr. slide, and the Patriots were the ones holding the card at the 222nd pick. Highway robbery. They moved the roster forward and banked a B for it.
They will regret leaving edge rusher for another day if the season turns on it. On the needs board they went 5 of 8, with wide receiver the one that mattered most.
The skill positions did well by the weekend.
Add it up and it is a good, unfussy class.
Pick-by-Pick
In pick 3 they get a go-to option on the outside. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
Circle this one: Nick Emmanwori at the 40th pick is a fall that decides a draft. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Somehow Colston Loveland was still sitting there in slot 71, and they pounced on premier tight end value. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
They barely believed it either: Jihaad Campbell still on the board at the 78th overall pick. A minor itch, scratched.
The board had Jake Majors higher than the Round 4 slot, and the offensive lineman fell to them anyway. The roster fit checks out.
They will replay Devin Neal at pick No. 142 for years; that is how good the value is. A need, and now a little less of one.
Taking Raheim Sanders in No. 219 is close to grand larceny; a running back that good had no business lasting this long. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Smael Mondon Jr. at Round 7, Pick 8 is a first-round grade at a bargain-bin price, no notes. Nice player, but the depth chart did not need him here.
A top-tier safety at a bargain, Xavier Nwankpa in Round 7, Pick 22, plain and simple. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
