You could see the war room lean forward. Raheim Sanders at Round 7, Pick 4 is the sort of fall that does not happen, except it just did.
They punted on edge rusher, and it is the miss that keeps the grade honest. With edge rusher, interior defensive lineman and other spots unsolved, spending premium capital on linebacker is the choice that costs them. The trade work was a quiet net positive.
They came away with juice, if not much beef up front.
All told, a solid class that does its job everywhere but edge rusher.
Pick-by-Pick
R1.11
· Pick 11
· Ashton Jeanty
· RB
· rank 2
They let Ashton Jeanty come to them and pounced at Round 1, Pick 11. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
R2.9
· Pick 41
· Malachi Moore
· S
· rank 16
The board fumbled Malachi Moore all the way to pick No. 41, and they scooped it up. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
R2.10
· Pick 42
· Harold Fannin Jr.
· TE
· rank 21
Harold Fannin Jr. at slot 42 is daylight robbery; nobody expected him to last. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
R3.8
· Pick 72
· Jay Higgins
· LB
· rank 61
Good things come to war rooms that wait, and Jay Higgins at the 72nd overall pick is the proof. A minor need, but a need all the same.
R3.22
· Pick 86
· Jalen Royals
· WR
· rank 75
A tidy bit of business in pick 86, where Jalen Royals graded well above the range. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
R4.7
· Pick 108
· Smael Mondon Jr.
· LB
· rank 42
Of all the spots to shop, they chose linebacker. Smael Mondon Jr. in No. 108 leaves edge rusher, interior defensive lineman and other spots for later.
R5.6
· Pick 144
· Parker Brailsford
· C
· rank 127
Parker Brailsford is a better player than the Round 5 slot suggests; smart patience, rewarded. A need, and now a little less of one.
R7.4
· Pick 218
· Raheim Sanders
· RB
· rank 132
Raheim Sanders in the 218th pick is a gift, value that borders on unfair. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
R7.9
· Pick 223
· Jamon Dumas-Johnson
· LB
· rank 175
Taking Jamon Dumas-Johnson in the Round 7 slot is close to grand larceny; a linebacker that good had no business lasting this long. Depth on depth, at a spot that was hardly crying out.
R7.25
· Pick 239
· Luke Lachey
· TE
· rank 234
A reasonable price with a little left over, Luke Lachey in pick 239. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
