The board owed the Patriots one, and it paid up: Cody Simon, the No. 119 name on the board, sitting there at the Round 7 slot like a gift left on the doorstep. Nothing here to lose sleep over; call it a B.
Leaving edge rusher unaddressed is the roster risk they will have to answer for in the fall. The dealing tilted against them, just enough to notice.
The future picks help the war chest more than the win-now roster.
Good work on the whole, with edge rusher the one box left unchecked.
Pick-by-Pick
In No. 10 they get a cornerstone up front. A clean fit for the roster.
A top-tier safety at a bargain, Malachi Moore in pick No. 36, plain and simple. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
You do not let a running back like Omarion Hampton reach the 68th overall pick and blink. They did not. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Steal is underselling it; Harold Fannin Jr. at pick 76 is a heist with the alarm still ringing. It fills a real need, too.
They robbed the room for Xavier Watts here, a fall nobody at the table saw coming. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Trey Amos in slot 105 is the kind of fall that makes a whole class. A minor need, but a need all the same.
Circle this one: Jack Nelson at the Round 5 slot is a fall that decides a draft. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Cody Simon at Round 7, Pick 6 is a first-round grade at a bargain-bin price, no notes. It adds depth where they could use a little.
Somehow Kevin Winston Jr. was still sitting there in pick 224, and they pounced on premier safety value. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Gentry Williams in No. 241 is fair value, right on his grade. Nice player, but the depth chart did not need him here.
