Somewhere a general manager is explaining how Kyle McCord got past him. The Patriots do not have to explain a thing at pick No. 235.
The interior defensive lineman spot stays a question, and it was the one they most needed an answer at. Every board in the league had Campbell lower, and that gap is the story. On the needs board they went 7 of 8, with edge rusher the one that mattered most.
Solid rather than spectacular, and there is nothing wrong with that.
Pick-by-Pick
In slot 1 they get a plug-and-play piece up front, reach and all. A clean fit for the roster.
Good things come to war rooms that wait, and Princely Umanmielen at Round 2, Pick 4 is the proof. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Taking Jason Marshall Jr. in pick 67 is close to grand larceny; a cornerback that good had no business lasting this long. Useful body for a position without much behind the starter.
They took Nick Emmanwori at par in the 93rd pick, which is nothing to complain about. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
They went early on Tyler Warren in the 103rd overall pick, and the value did not follow. The roster fit checks out.
A slide stopped in No. 139, with Raheim Sanders worth more than the price. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
The board fumbled Luke Lachey all the way to the Round 7 slot, and they scooped it up. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Quietly one of the better values of the day, De'Corian Clark at pick No. 220. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
You do not let a quarterback like Kyle McCord reach pick 235 and blink. They did not. A need, and now a little less of one.
