You build a draft on nights like this. Jaydn Ott had no business being available in slot 217, and the Patriots did the only sane thing and turned in the card.
That edge rusher hole did not close this weekend, and it was the biggest one on the wall. Reaching for Foster left real value on the table behind him. They went 5 of 8 on their needs, which is most of what a draft is for.
A competent weekend that does not make headlines and does not need to.
Pick-by-Pick
In pick No. 1 they get a potential shutdown corner at fair value.
A market-rate interior defensive lineman, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Deone Walker. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
They paid a round early for Josh Simmons in slot 67, more than the board wanted. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
They paid sticker price for Smael Mondon Jr. in No. 93, and that is fine. Useful body for a position without much behind the starter.
Tyler Warren in the 103rd pick is the kind of reach that only looks good if he outplays it. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Bryce Foster at the Round 5 slot is a clear overpay, with better names still on the board. The roster fit checks out.
A running back of that caliber at the 217th overall pick is the definition of value, full stop. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Value with a capital V on De'Corian Clark in Round 7, Pick 6, a genuine coup. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Dorian Strong in slot 235 is fair value, right on his grade. Insurance at a position that did not really ask for it.
