Nobody had Jalen Travis this high, and it is not close. The Patriots reached 45 spots to get him at No. 238.
They will regret leaving edge rusher for another day if the season turns on it. The roster is better shaped than it was, with wide receiver chief among the fixes.
Add it up and it is a good, unfussy class.
Pick-by-Pick
In pick 4 they get a true top target. The biggest hole, addressed.
Josh Conerly Jr. in pick No. 38 is exactly on the number, no argument either way. A need, and now a little less of one.
They paid sticker price for Jayden Higgins in Round 3, Pick 5, and that is fine. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Jared Wilson at the 77th overall pick is a steep price for a hunch, hard to square with any board. It fills a real need, too.
A straight-up fair deal on Hollin Pierce at the Round 4 slot, value and slot in agreement. The roster fit checks out.
A big swing on Oronde Gadsden II at the 144th pick, well ahead of any board in the building. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Cam Jackson at the 217th overall pick is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Teddye Buchanan in slot 220 is the kind of reach that only looks good if he outplays it. It adds depth where they could use a little.
They reached into another round for Jalen Travis, and the board is nowhere close to agreeing. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
