Start where it matters. The Patriots took Drake Maye to run the offense for the next decade, and every other decision this weekend bends around that one. A sturdy weekend that grades out a B-.
They covered a lot of ground and still skipped safety, which is a strange place to end up. They will need Vidal to outplay his draft slot in a hurry to justify it.
A workmanlike haul that should hold up just fine.
Pick-by-Pick
In Round 1, Pick 3 they get their quarterback of the future. A clean fit for the roster.
No drama and no debate, Xavier Legette went about where he belonged in the 34th pick. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
A straight-up fair deal on Patrick Paul at No. 68, value and slot in agreement. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Nothing to complain about; Jalen McMillan went a shade earlier than his grade, which is fine. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Ben Sinnott in the Round 5 slot is a bargain the rest of the room will envy. It fills a real need, too.
By-the-book stuff, Fabien Lovett at slot 180 squarely in line with his ranking. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
The board had cheaper options than Jaylen Harrell at pick 193, and it noticed. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Kimani Vidal at pick No. 231 is the kind of overdraft that needs everything to break right. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
