New England Patriots

The Patriots bet the future on Maye. The board says B+.

The search is over. The Patriots handed the keys to Drake Maye, and the whole operation now runs on his development.

They robbed the room blind at the table, and it lifts the grade on its own. The Johnson value carries more weight than any single miss elsewhere. They covered a lot of ground and still skipped edge rusher, which is a strange place to end up.

A competent weekend that does not make headlines and does not need to.

Pick-by-Pick

R1.4 · Pick 4 · Drake Maye · QB · rank 7
In No. 4 they get a long-term answer under center at fair value.
R2.2 · Pick 34 · Amarius Mims · OT · rank 25
They read the board right and Amarius Mims was the payoff at pick No. 34. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
R2.3 · Pick 35 · Xavier Legette · WR · rank 38
No edge and no loss on Xavier Legette in the 35th overall pick; it is a wash and a sensible one. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
R3.4 · Pick 68 · Kiran Amegadjie · OT · rank 66
They paid sticker price for Kiran Amegadjie in slot 68, and that is fine. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
R4.16 · Pick 116 · Theo Johnson · TE · rank 122
A straight-up fair deal on Theo Johnson at pick 116, value and slot in agreement. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
R5.1 · Pick 137 · Isaac Guerendo · RB · rank 128
Isaac Guerendo in the Round 5 slot is a bargain the rest of the room will envy. The roster fit checks out.
R5.2 · Pick 138 · Jarrian Jones · CB · rank 136
Jarrian Jones in Round 5, Pick 2 is exactly on the number, no argument either way. Useful body for a position without much behind the starter.
R5.17 · Pick 153 · Tyrone Tracy Jr. · WR · rank 151
No drama and no debate, Tyrone Tracy Jr. went about where he belonged in the 153rd pick. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
R6.5 · Pick 180 · Marist Liufau · LB · rank 164
Marist Liufau is a better player than Round 6, Pick 5 suggests; smart patience, rewarded. Not urgent, but hardly pointless.
R6.18 · Pick 193 · Jordan Jefferson · DT · rank 184
Jordan Jefferson slipping to slot 193 is the kind of luck good rooms make for themselves. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
R6.37 · Pick 212 · Cornelius Johnson · WR · rank 186
Somehow Cornelius Johnson was still sitting there in pick 212, and they pounced on premier wide receiver value. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
R7.11 · Pick 231 · Jordan Magee · LB · rank 221
A tidy bit of business in the 231st pick, where Jordan Magee graded well above the range. Nice player, but the depth chart did not need him here.
