New England Patriots

Best value of the weekend goes to the Patriots for Jones: B+.

Whoever sat across the table from the Patriots should ask for a receipt. They cleaned the room out, prying loose far more value than they gave up, and it was the quiet MVP of their weekend.

They banked enough surplus on Jones to cover a lot of smaller sins. They will need Johnson to outplay his draft slot in a hurry to justify it.

The safety spot stays a question, and it was the one they most needed an answer at.

Good work on the whole, with safety the one box left unchecked.

Pick-by-Pick

R1.5 · Pick 5 · Olumuyiwa Fashanu · OT · rank 8
In pick No. 5 they get a plug-and-play piece up front. A real need, handled.
R2.2 · Pick 34 · Xavier Legette · WR · rank 38
By-the-book stuff, Xavier Legette at the Round 2 slot squarely in line with his ranking. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
R2.5 · Pick 37 · Amarius Mims · OT · rank 24
Amarius Mims in No. 37 is a bargain the rest of the room will envy. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
R3.5 · Pick 69 · Jaylen Wright · RB · rank 71
Jaylen Wright in the 69th pick is fair value, right on his grade. A need, and now a little less of one.
R3.14 · Pick 78 · Devontez Walker · WR · rank 70
A quiet steal in Round 3, Pick 14: Devontez Walker for less than the market said. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
R3.37 · Pick 100 · Bucky Irving · RB · rank 91
Good things come to war rooms that wait, and Bucky Irving at pick 100 is the proof. The roster fit checks out.
R4.3 · Pick 103 · Theo Johnson · TE · rank 122
They talked themselves into Theo Johnson at slot 103, and the board did not agree. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
R5.1 · Pick 137 · Elijah Jones · CB · rank 115
Elijah Jones at pick 137 is a first-round grade at a bargain-bin price, no notes. Not urgent, but hardly pointless.
R5.4 · Pick 140 · Nehemiah Pritchett · CB · rank 143
Nehemiah Pritchett at the 140th overall pick is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. Pure best-available; the position was not exactly begging.
R6.5 · Pick 180 · Fabien Lovett · DL · rank 183
They took Fabien Lovett at par in the Round 6 slot, which is nothing to complain about. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
R6.18 · Pick 193 · Jaylen Harrell · DE-EDGE · rank 207
Jaylen Harrell at the 193rd pick is a conviction pick that outran the value. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
R7.11 · Pick 231 · Trevin Wallace · LB · rank 233
They paid sticker price for Trevin Wallace in No. 231, and that is fine. It thickens a room that could stand to be thicker.
