They finally answered the question that shadows every other one. Drake Maye is the Patriots' quarterback, full stop.
They are betting Laube proves the room right and everyone else wrong. For all the activity, safety went untouched, which is hard to explain. If one pick saves this weekend, it is Bertrand.
Job largely done: edge rusher settled and 7 of 8 of the wish list covered.
Good work on the whole, with safety the one box left unchecked.
Pick-by-Pick
In slot 3 they get a franchise quarterback at fair value. A real need, handled.
Adonai Mitchell in the Round 2 slot is fine work, a shade of surplus and no downside. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
They paid sticker price for Patrick Paul in pick No. 68, and that is fine. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Theo Johnson in No. 103 is a reach so steep the board needed a second look to believe it. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
They reached a country mile for Dylan Laube at pick 137, and the board is aghast. It fills a real need, too.
Fabien Lovett in the 180th overall pick is exactly on the number, no argument either way. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
The board had cheaper options than Jaylen Harrell at Round 6, Pick 18, and it noticed. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
JD Bertrand in the 231st pick is a bargain the rest of the room will envy. A minor need, but a need all the same.
