After circling the position for what felt like forever, the Patriots committed. Drake Maye is the quarterback now, and the roster gets built to his timeline. No fireworks, but a solid B.
McLachlan has a lot of ground to make up just to look fairly priced. Smith falling to them is the kind of break a good board is built to catch.
The trades cost them a sliver of value they did not need to spend.
In short, they left a little better than they arrived, which is the whole idea.
Pick-by-Pick
In slot 6 they get their guy under center for the next decade. A clean fit for the roster.
Nothing to complain about; Brian Thomas Jr. went a shade earlier than his grade, which is fine. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
A straight-up fair deal on Roman Wilson at No. 47, value and slot in agreement. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Bralen Trice at pick 68 nudges the ledger their way without any fuss. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Matt Goncalves at the 105th overall pick jumps the queue by a touch more than is comfortable. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
By-the-book stuff, Roger Rosengarten at pick No. 137 squarely in line with his ranking. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Taking Tykee Smith in Round 6, Pick 5 is close to grand larceny; a safety that good had no business lasting this long. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Tanner McLachlan in the 181st pick is a reach so steep the board needed a second look to believe it. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
A slide stopped in Round 6, Pick 18, with Fabien Lovett worth more than the price. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Frank Gore Jr. at pick No. 231 is right where the board had him, plain and simple. A need, and now a little less of one.
