Start where it matters. The Patriots took Drake Maye to run the offense for the next decade, and every other decision this weekend bends around that one. It nets out to a B, which feels about right.
Reaching for Vidal left real value on the table behind him. Newton at that cost is the sort of edge that compounds over a roster.
That safety hole did not close this weekend, and it was the biggest one on the wall.
In short, they left a little better than they arrived, which is the whole idea.
Pick-by-Pick
In No. 3 they get their quarterback of the future at fair value.
Fair-plus on Jordan Morgan, a quiet win that adds up over a draft. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
They read the board right and Ricky Pearsall was the payoff at Round 3, Pick 4. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
A reach for Trey Benson in pick No. 79; a little patience would have been rewarded. It fills a real need, too.
They talked themselves into Theo Johnson at the 103rd pick, and the board did not agree. A need, and now a little less of one.
No drama and no debate, Isaiah Adams went about where he belonged in the 137th overall pick. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Josh Newton in pick 143 is the kind of fall that makes a whole class. A minor need, but a need all the same.
A conviction pick on Justin Rogers at the Round 6 slot that the board grades a round light. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
No edge and no loss on Curtis Jacobs in slot 193; it is a wash and a sensible one. A minor itch, scratched.
Jaylen Harrell at the 197th pick is a clear overpay, with better names still on the board. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Kimani Vidal in the 231st overall pick is a reach so steep the board needed a second look to believe it. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
