The one hole that towered over the rest is filled. The Patriots spent their marquee pick on Drake Maye, and for the first time in a while there is a real answer at quarterback. Call it a sensible B, earned the boring way.
They will need Means to outplay his draft slot in a hurry to justify it. Rakestraw Jr. falling to them is the kind of break a good board is built to catch. The edge rusher hole is the one line item this class does not answer.
They left with wide receiver solved and the rest of the wish list mostly ticked off.
Nothing here to lose sleep over, and plenty to feel decent about.
Pick-by-Pick
In slot 3 they get their quarterback of the future at fair value.
A slide stopped in Round 2, Pick 14, with Xavier Legette worth more than the price. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Kingsley Suamataia at the Round 3 slot nudges the ledger their way without any fuss. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
They robbed the room for Ennis Rakestraw Jr. here, a fall nobody at the table saw coming. A quiet depth add at a thin-ish spot.
Theo Johnson in the 103rd pick is a reach so steep the board needed a second look to believe it. The roster fit checks out.
A market-rate offensive lineman, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Roger Rosengarten. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
They read the board right and Javion Cohen was the payoff at pick 180. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Value said wait; Bub Means in No. 193 says they were not listening. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Nothing to complain about; Frank Gore Jr. went a shade earlier than his grade, which is fine. A need, and now a little less of one.
JD Bertrand at the Round 7 slot is the sort of value that quietly wins a weekend. Useful body for a position without much behind the starter.
